Latecomers to Welsh
If you are looking after a child who is starting Welsh-medium school a bit later than most – maybe after year one or two – don’t worry! Swansea has a dedicated Welsh Centre for Welsh Learners to help these young people.

Designed to give extra support to children.
What is the Swansea Welsh Centre for Welsh Learners?
The Welsh Centre for Welsh Learners is designed to give extra support to children who might not have had as much time to learn Welsh before joining a Welsh-medium school. The goal is to help these young people catch up with their classmates, so they can feel confident and comfortable using Welsh in class, making friends, and enjoying their lessons.
The centre provides special lessons and activities that will help improve their Welsh skills, so they can thrive in their new school environment.
Children who join the Welsh Centre for Welsh Learners, also known as ‘latecomers’, attend the centre for three days each week to get extra Welsh lessons and support.
On Fridays, our team visits them at their schools to check in and see how they’re getting on. Typically, these pupils are supported for about three terms.
By staying immersed in Welsh for a longer period, children usually make much quicker progress and start feeling more confident in using the language both in and outside the classroom.
